Countries with the Highest Income Tax Rates
Countries with the highest top marginal personal income tax rates in the world.
This ranking lists every country by its top marginal personal income tax rate — the rate that applies to the highest slice of income. The top 10 highest taxed countries are dominated by Western Europe: Finland, Denmark, Austria, Sweden and Ireland all levy top rates above 50%, joined by Japan (55%) and Canada (53%, combining federal and provincial tax). Chad tops the table at 60%.
A high top marginal rate does not mean everyone pays it: these rates typically kick in only above a high income threshold, and effective rates (what people actually pay on their whole income) are far lower. High-tax countries also tend to pair these rates with extensive public services, healthcare, and pensions.
