Wealth Tax

Spain levies a wealth tax (Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio) on net assets exceeding €700,000 (€500,000 in Catalonia), with an additional €300,000 exemption for the primary residence. National rates range from 0.2% to 3.5%. Some autonomous communities like Madrid have historically bonified (eliminated) this tax, but the national Temporary Solidarity Tax on Large Fortunes (Impuesto Temporal de Solidaridad de las Grandes Fortunas) introduced in 2023 imposes rates of 1.7% to 3.5% on net wealth above €3 million regardless of regional policies.

Inheritance / Estate Tax

Spain levies inheritance and gift tax (Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones) at national rates from 7.65% to 34%, with multipliers based on the pre-existing wealth of the heir and their relationship to the deceased. However, autonomous communities have wide discretion and many have drastically reduced or virtually eliminated this tax for close relatives. Madrid, Andalusia, and several other regions offer 99% bonifications for spouses and descendants.

Property Tax

Spain levies IBI (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles), an annual property tax based on cadastral value, with rates typically ranging from 0.4% to 1.1% for urban properties. Property transfers are subject to Transfer Tax (ITP) of 6-10% depending on the autonomous community, or VAT at 10% for new builds. Capital gains from property sales are subject to a 3% withholding for non-residents, and a municipal capital gains tax (plusvalía municipal) may also apply.
