Wealth Tax

Denmark abolished its wealth tax in 1997. There are no plans to reintroduce it. Instead, Denmark relies on its high income and consumption taxes for revenue.

Inheritance / Estate Tax

Denmark levies an inheritance tax (boafgift) of 15% on estates exceeding a tax-free threshold of DKK 333,100 (2024). For close family members (spouse is exempt), only the 15% rate applies. For more distant relatives and unrelated heirs, an additional 25% tax applies to their share after the initial 15%, resulting in a combined effective rate of 36.25%. Gifts to children above DKK 74,100 per year are subject to 15% gift tax.

Property Tax

Denmark levies annual property taxes including land value tax (grundskyld) at rates of 1.6-3.4% of the assessed land value (set by municipalities), and property value tax (ejendomsværdiskat) of 0.51% on the property value up to DKK 3,040,000 and 1.4% above. A major property tax reform effective from 2024 links taxes to updated property valuations. A registration duty of 0.6% plus DKK 1,850 applies to property transfers.
